Το Byzantine Catholic Seminary των ΗΠΑ οργανώνει, μεταξύ 21 και 23 Μαΐου 2019,  Ακαδημαϊκό Συμπόσιο με θέμα: «East, West and Beyond. Enriching one another’s Liturgical Traditions». General Description

This academic symposium seeks to engage participants in an investigative dialogue that highlights cases of liturgical synthesis in Eastern liturgical theology and practice from other Eastern and Western theological and liturgical traditions and showcases general cross pollination between Eastern and Western Liturgy.

Areas of Study

Scholars are welcome to explore or analyze (though are not limited to) the following suggested areas of research: 

  • Latin or Western influences on Byzantine liturgical rites and praxis
  • Eastern influences on Latin or Western liturgical rites and praxis
  • East-West mutual influences on sacramental theology
  • Byzantine and Oriental interaction and mutual influenc
  • The use of Latin, Byzantine, Armenian, and Syriac texts outside of their original liturgical family
  • Methodologies and principles for evaluating adoption of e limine sources from other liturgies
  • Comparative study of Eucharistic Prayers from East and West
  • Eastern and Western spirituality within the liturgical context
  • Ecology, environment, and cosmos in Eastern and Western liturgy

Travel / Bursary Grants

For those scholars in need of a subsidy for travel, the organizing committee will accept requests and award a grant to defray costs for up to four applicants.

Call for Student Papers & Monetary Award

Graduate students (master’s or doctoral levels) are encouraged to register for the conference and prepare scholarly papers, which they are invited to present. A 250-word abstract and abbreviated 2-page curriculum vitae must be received. Submissions may be made directly to the email: eastwest2019@bcs.edu by January 31, 2019. Notification of accepted papers will be communicated by February 28, 2019. Student presentations should run between 20-25 minutes, with 5-10 minutes allotted for questions. The best student paper will receive a monetary award of $250.

Call for Plenary Speakers

The Symposium is inviting scholars to deliver papers in the areas mentioned above. There will be four plenary sessions during the event. Speakers are invited to submit a 250-word abstract and abbreviated 2-page CV to the email: eastwest2019@bcs.edu by January 31, 2019. Notification of accepted papers will be communicated by February 28, 2019. Plenary speakers should plan to present no more than 45 minutes, and allow 15 minutes for questions and answers.

Publication of Papers

The Acta are to be published by a peer-review journal chosen by the organizing committee. Details will be forthcoming.
